After a trip to the Butterfly Conservatory at the American museum of Natural History this weekend, I was blown away by the true beauty of nature. As a designer I couldn’t help but be I pressed by the complexity of the design of the butterfly and understand now why fashion and technology are looking to these beautiful creatures for inspiration.
Their colours and patterns varied from subtle designs to vivid, electric blues that seemed to light up as they fluttered by and their wings were delicate to touch yet had a strength when the butterfly took off from its leaf. During my short experience amongst these creatures I began to understand why Jean Paul Gautier used them in his Spring Couture collection of 2014 and how they inspired the Mirasol display which could replace LEDs for e-readers.
If you’re a designer and in New York I recommend you take a break from the vast array of galleries one weekend and instead take in the designs that Mother Nature has created.
